KARL D. UITTI (Ph.D., U. of California-Berkeley), the John N. Woodhull Professor of Modern Languages and former Chair of the Department, is best known as a medievalist and Romance philologist, although his earliest published works were in the field of 19th - and early 20th - century French literature: The Concept of Self in the Symbolist Novel, 1961; La Passion littéraire de Remy de Gourmont, 1962; articles on Victor Hugo, Proust, and Franco-Hispanic literary relations in the early Modernist period. Uitti maintains an interest in modern literature as well as in the history and theory of literary criticism and analysis (Linguistics and Literary Theory [1969; repr. 1975; Spanish trans. 1975]; a number of publications on such related subjects as philosophical grammar). More recently he has published on the theory and history of philology, as well as on matters pertaining to textual criticism and editing of Old French, including electronic editions and database analysis. His chief work has been in medieval Romance studies, with an emphasis on French; some of his studies include: Story, Myth, and Celebration in Old French Narrative Poetry--1050-1200 (1973); a critical edition with modern French translation (in collaboration with Alfred Foulet) of Chrétien de Troyes's Le Chevalier de la Charrette (Lancelot), 1989; a critical edition for the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade (Paris, 1994 [corrected version: 1997]) of Chrétien's Le Chevalier au Lion (Yvain); a monograph on the origins of European epic and romance narrative (Epica e romanzo cavalleresco, dalle origini alla Commedia di Dante [Milan, 1993]); a study of Chrétien's romances, written with M. A. Freeman (Chrétien de Troyes Revisited [New York, 1995]); histories of medieval French and Old Provençal literature (Dictionary of the Middle Ages); major articles on such topics as the Old Provençal Life of Saint Fides, the Lais of Marie de France, Old French and Old Spanish historiography, Antoine de La Sale, François Villon, Christine de Pizan, medieval poetics, and epic and romance narrative. At present he is engaged on a long-range project involving the computerization of the Lancelot manuscript tradition. He has directed over thirty-seven doctoral dissertations on a wide variety of subjects including medieval theater, Old Provençal literature, the Romance of the Rose, lyric poetry, hagiography, codicology, prose and verse narrative, and Proust. Uitti has served on the editorial boards of Romance Philology, French Forum, Historiographia Linguistica and the Dictionary of the Middle Ages, as well as in an advisory capacity to the National Endowment for the Humanities and numerous university presses and administrations. At present; he is General Editor of The Edward C. Armstrong Monographs on Medieval Literature. Uitti has been decorated Officier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques.
