The first champion of the Copa Sudamericana since its beginning in 2002, San Lorenzo hadn’t won an international title after that. The only competition that San Lorenzo had won after that was an Argentinean National League in 2007 (Clausura).
The 32-year-old Bernardo Romeo is one of the best players of the team since 2007, when he returned to the team. The forward played for San Lorenzo from 1998 to 2002, when he transferred to Hamburg (GER). Bernardo Romeo scored 2 goals in Copa Sudamericana.
The offensive midfielder Leandro Romagnoli transferred back to San Lorenzo in 2009 after a passage for Sporting (POR). Romagnoli played for San Lorenzo from 1998 to 2005. In the Uruguayan National League, River Plate is getting in a good position. With 7 rounds played, the team has the total of 13 points (the sum of 3 wins, 4 draws and no losses; 12 goals scored and 7 allowed). A curious statistic is that River Plate is the only of the 16 teams of the competition that did not lose any of the matches played until now.
River Plate never won an international competition in its history. The team will try with all its forces to become champion of the Copa Sudamericana 2009 and make history of the club.
River Plate is a club in ascension in Uruguay. The team never won a National League (only 2nd Division titles). For the first time, River Plate is trying to reach its first title of the Uruguayan National League. River is only 3 points far from the leader of the competition, Danubio.
River Plate is the merger of Olimpia FC (1922) and Capurro (home town team). River was only founded on May 11, 1932, 10 years later than the team that gave life to Club Atlético River Plate.
River needs to win to classify (the same result – 1-0 -, will leave the match to the penalty shoot-out). If River wins by 2-1 or any other combination, the team reaches the Semifinals.
The forward Federico Puppo is one of the top scorers of the team with 2 goals in the National League. In the Copa Sudamericana, the forward only scored once against Blooming (BOL) in the very first match of the competition.
Playing at the Centenario Stadium River Plate used to be an almost invincible opponent. In a match full of surprises, San Lorenzo won River Plate in Uruguay by the simplest score (1-0). Now River must win as a visitor.
