Lenten Exercises

Dear Friends,

We all know that proper physical exercise keeps us healthy. Many if not most of us do not enjoy doing physical exercise. If we persevere doing proper physical exercise we discover we feel good. We are then willing to do proper physical exercise because it makes us feel good. People tell us we look good. Doctors give us good numbers.
Here are some spiritual exercises given to me this past week. I am offering them to you. You may choose one, or several, or all of them for your Lenten spiritual exercises.
1. Turn off what you listen to and give yourself some quiet time. Listen with your heart. You will be ready to hear God speaking to you.
2. Actively join in the prayers at Mass; just don’t look to be entertained.
3. Mass is about Eucharist. It is a prayer of thanksgiving for God’s gift of His Son, but for His Words and Himself in the Bread and Cup.
4. Go to Reconciliation (Confession) and receive God’s forgiveness.
5. Pay more attention what you like about going to Church than what you do not like.
6. You cannot please God and the world at the same time. Make time to please God.
Ejercicios de Cuaresma
Queridos amigos,

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS: After reflecting on today’s

scripture readings, consider how you would answer the following questions:

  1. Where have you seen a lack of welcome toward a person or group? How do you respond to categorical shunning?

  2. Which groups are welcome, and which unwelcome, in your local community? How does your parish life erase or underscore these divisions?

  3. How can the love of Christ overcome those elements and bring peace to those who alienate others?
