(Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford; friend of Keble, Pusey and R. H. Froude; founded Oxford Movement with fellow "Tractarians" William Palmer, Froude and A. P. Perceval; abandoned Church of England and joined Church of Rome 1845, an influential move; ordained 1846; established Oratory at Birmingham 1847; Rector of the Catholic University at Dublin, 1854-8; created Cardinal, 1879; author of religious works and Christian apologies)
