Lent 2016

Dear Friends,

February 10 is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the 40 days of Lent.
We prepare for the celebration of Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. We do the traditional Lenten exercises, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
This year I am suggesting that we let the one-time exercises influence each day. Here are the one-time Lenten exercises: a) receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday; b) receiving the Sacrament of Confession. How can ashes influence each of the forty days? My suggestion is that you kiss the cross you have in your home. You may do it with all the family at the same time.
How can the Sacrament of Confession influence each of the forty days? Make an Act of Contrition each day. Most do it at the time of going to bed.
I am also suggesting that we do each of the weekly exercises one time. Participate in the Way of the Cross on a Friday. Attend a daily Mass once a week in addition to Sunday.
Here are suggested daily exercises. Contribute one can of food daily to the 40 Cans for Lent sponsored by Catholic Charities. For spiritual discipline, reduce one food item of your main meal by one-half. Pray for one person each day and tell that person you prayed for them.
May we all open our hearts to receive Lenten blessings.

Cuaresma 2016

Queridos amigos,

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS: After reflecting on today’s Scripture readings, consider how you would answer the following questions:

  1. What would you have to let go of to make you accept that your’re “sent”?

  2. Is there one aspect of your present self you’d like to see transformed?

  3. What binds you to the past, or to the present hour, in ways that make you unfree to be a disciple?
