Iran-Brazil ties growing: ambassador

Brazilian ambassador to Iran Antonio Salgado said here Wednesday that the long-standing relations between Iran and Brazil have been growing in recent years, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Since Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva took office in 2003, the South American country started to upgrade relations with other countries including Iran, which is a regional power, Salgado said.
"Brazil and Iran share many concerns regarding the international issues," he said, adding that the two countries also have similar approaches to development.
"Through different ways, the two countries seek promotion of bilateral relations in order to safeguard national independence in coexistence with other nations in the international community," he was quoted as saying.
Salgado said Brazil is interested in enhancing cooperation with Iran in trade, cultural and investment areas, according to IRNA.
Salgado referred to the upcoming visit of the Brazilian president to Iran saying it will take place next month with the aim to enhance Tehran-Brasilia ties, IRNA said.
During a meeting with Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology Sergio Machado Rezende in Tehran in March, Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki stressed Iran's desire to expand bilateral relations with Brazil, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.
Rezende expressed his satisfaction on Iran-Brazil relations and called for expansion of ties in the scientific field between the two countries.
The Brazilian government defends Iran's right to a peaceful nuclear program, though the United States claims the Iranian program is designed to develop nuclear weapons.
Iran has denied the Western accusation and stressed its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.
